Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway Northern Access Project

Reviewed

Project overview

Transport for NSW is delivering a new ramp and cycle path from the Sydney Harbour Bridge cycleway to the bike network in Milsons Point. The project will improve the cycling experience for all bike users at this iconic landmark and support the predicted future growth in the number of bike riders travelling north and south of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Project information

Project status

In March 2024 Transport for NSW appointed Arenco (NSW) Pty Ltd to build the Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway Northern Access Project.

The Project includes:

  • a new elevated linear bike ramp, with a three metre wide deck, removing the hazard of navigating the existing stairs, providing a safer north-south cycle link and improving accessibility for all bike riders.
  • a new 2.5m wide two-way dedicated cycle path on Alfred Street South to improve safety by separating cyclists, motorists and pedestrians.
  • new shared paths on Alfred Street South and Lavender Street, and upgrades to the Lavender Street crossing and roundabout to improve the cycling and walking experience.
  • removal of up to 15 parking spots to facilitate footpath widening and relocation of the bus stop on Alfred Street South.

Benefits

The linear ramp and shared cycle path will:

  • Provide a critical north-south link in the current cycling network
  • Provide improved accessibility for bike riders of different levels of ability and mobility
  • Remove the hazard of navigating the existing stairs at the Sydney Harbour Bridge
  • Promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles and reduce the number of cars on the road
  • Improve the safety of bike riders, pedestrians and motorists travelling around the northern end of Alfred Street South at the Lavender Street roundabout
  • Improve safety by separating pedestrian and bike rider traffic around Milsons Point Station near Burton Street
  • Provide a safer option than a spiral ramp due to potential congestion of pedestrians, bike riders and motor vehicles
  • Support the predicted future growth in the number of bike riders travelling north and south of the Sydney Harbour Bridge

The existing Burton Street stairs have heritage significance as original fabric of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The stairs will be open for use during construction and retained once the cycleway is complete.

Construction

In August 2024 we’ll be starting early work to build the new ramp and cycle path.

Early work will include:

  • converting the southern bowling green grassed area in Bradfield Park Central to an all-weather surface to ensure the markets can continue to operate on all scheduled days
  • establishing the main site compound in Bradfield Park Central on the existing synthetic bowling green
  • establishing a construction compound in Bradfield Park North.
