Detailed investigation and design work for permanent repairs to some of the larger landslips on the Oxley Highway at Mount Seaview is underway, with work expected to start late this year.

This essential tourism and trade route received severe damage from extreme weather in March 2021, with about 33 kilometres of the highway significantly damaged. There were more than 70 landslips, with 10 major slips near Mount Seaview.

This damage was compounded in March 2022 when a second extreme weather event occurred at the site causing another three major landslips.

Transport for NSW crews and specialist contractors have been working since that time to repair the slips and make them less susceptible to future extreme weather events.

Transport for NSW Regional Director North Anna Zycki said restoration work was prioritised based on the stability of the slip sites, with much of the high priority stabilisation work now completed.

“This is difficult terrain and the repairs at all sites presented significant challenges, but we are pleased with the progress that’s been made,” Ms Zycki said.

“We’ve now reached the point that we can turn our attention to the larger and more complex slip sites.

“These are even more challenging and require a higher level of investigation and design.

“We are well into that process now, but we want to make sure the community is aware it will take longer to repair these slopes and that the road will need to be closed at various times so the work can be carried out safely.

“We will keep the community informed about the work we are doing and any planned closures, and we plan to do this with as little impact on road users as we can.

“People have been patient so far and we thank them for that. We just need their patience for a little longer.”

Details of the work carried out on the major slip sites between Gingers Creek and Yarras from the first major event in March 2021 to the completion and full reopening of a section of highway at Mount Seaview in May 2024 can be found on Transport’s website:
